Journalism- Lecture 2- New News

In Lecture 2 of Journalism and Communication on the 5th of March, the topic was New News.

The lecture was primarily based on discussing topics such as web iterations, e.g Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and 3.0 and the difference between Old Media and New Media.

We talked about the transformation of the World Wide Web from when it was created up until the present and how much the formats and information published has changed.
Bruce did a fun exercise in the middle of the lecture in which he handed out jellybeans and then took them back to communicate the message of entitlement and the notion if will people pay for something they believe they are entitled to get for free?

I thought this question was an interesting statement because of its controversial nature and the real-life setting of the exercise of which it was conducted.

Hyperlocalisation in Web 3.0 was a topic of discussion because we talked about what this means for news and how it will be specific, personalised and the advertising online will now be direct to your needs and wants through looking through your past online history.

We talked about the struggle for production companies to convince audiences to pay for journalism online and that possible incentives that companies could use are the value adds, e.g subscriptions and free gifts.
However if people don't subscribe, it could be the end of journalism.

In this lecture, I learnt the definition of Web 3.0 and what this means for news in the future.
This lecture brought to my attention the struggle journalists will have in the future when trying to get people to pay for their content online and the future of online journalism.

After the lecture I promptly completed the readings posted on blackboard. I read the one about blogging and I found it very helpful in relation to explaining the different features in a blog and what they are made for.
I also read the 'From Biggest Job to Best Job' which talks about the break down of Old Media and New Media and the difference between the Web 1-3.0's.

I have to admit I am really enjoying blogging and reflecting on the lectures and expressing my personal opinions.
